The right place at the right time.

This is a photo taken from the International Space Station as it happened to be passing over the Sarychev Volcano on the Kuril Islands on June 12, 2009. Glad someone happened to be looking out the window.

The perspective of this is interesting. No one had ever before seen an eruption of a volcano from above, and I guess I should add, “and lived to tell about it.” Here is a photo of something we might never have seen.

I draw no lesson from this other than how wonderful a thing serendipity is.
